Finnegans wake gutenberg5/23/2023 Note that we don’t actually need to implement quaternion multiplication in general, though that would be sufficient. How would you best implement quaternion multiplication? Of course the answer depends on your environment and what you mean by “best.” Could that be exploited for some slight efficiency? But the input to the question about Finnegans Wake only involves three of these elements. We’re carrying out multiplications in the group Q of unit quaternions, a group with eight elements: ☑, ± i, ± j, ± k. Is there any sort of useful summary of the data short of carrying out the whole multiplication? In other words, could you scan the list while doing something other than quaternion multiplication, something faster to compute? Something analogous to sufficient statistics. So it would not be enough to have a count of how many times each letter appears. the order in which you multiply things matters. Quaternion multiplication is not commutative, i.e. You could initialize an accumulator to 1 and then march through the list, updating the accumulator by multiplying it by the next element. Suppose you did extract all the i‘s, j‘s, and k‘s from James Joyce’s novel Finnegans Wake. Result of extracting the i’s, j’s, and k’s in order from Finnegans Wake and interpreting as a quaternion product It posts bizarre queries that Wolfram Alpha can’t answer. I stumbled on a Twitter account yesterday called Wolfram|Alpha Can’t.

Cold storage koepp5/23/2023 Cold Storage is a story of the fight for survival, as an unlikely group of heroes work to save mankind from the threat of a deadly organism.Ĭold Storage charts the mutation of a contagious organism, that has the power to kill both humans and animals. I received my promotional copy of American screenwriter David Koepp’s novel Cold Storage in a sealed yellow bio hazard bag, which sparked my initial interest, but I was also a bit apprehensive as to the contents of this book. Over one harrowing night, the unlikely trio must figure out how to quarantine this horror again. He races across the country to help two unwitting security guards – one an ex-con, the other a single mother. Now, after decades of festering in a forgotten sub-basement, the specimen has found its way out and is on a lethal feeding frenzy. When Pentagon bioterror operative Roberto Diaz was sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack, he found something far worse: a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction. Dion leonard gobi5/22/2023 However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. He found himself letting Gobi sleep in his tent at night, giving her food and water out of his own limited supply, and carrying her across numerous rivers, even when he knew it would mean putting him behind in the race, or worse, prevent him from finishing at all.Īlthough Dion did not cross the finish line first, he felt he had won something even greater – a new outlook on life and a new friend that he planned on bringing home as soon as arrangements were made. Whereas in the past these races were all about winning and being the best, his goal now was to make sure he and Gobi’s friendship continued well after the finish line. The lovable pup, who would later earn the name Gobi, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains, across massive sand dunes, through yurt villages and the black sands of the Gobi Desert, keeping pace with him for 77 miles.Īs Dion witnessed the incredible determination and heart of this small animal, he found his own heart undergoing a change as well. A man, a dog, and the lengths to which love will go to sacrifice for its companion.įinding Gobi is the miraculous tale of Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China.

Gone Rogue by Marissa Meyer5/22/2023 It seemed like the same conversations and problems were re-hashed over and over again. Like with the first book in this graphic novel duology, I had major problems with the story line. Unfortunately, Gone Rogue was a huge let down and became my lowest rated book in the entire series. Particularly, I had problems with the pacing in the story as well as certain characters not acting consistently with their personalities shown in the book series. She also considers to struggle with her humanity and feelings towards Kinney.Īfter reading Wires and Nerve, I was slightly disappointed in the story, but still enjoyed seeing my favorites again. In this conclusion to the graphic novel series, Iko continues to fight a rogue soldiers set out to destroy Cinder. Wires and Nerve: Gone Rogue is the second installment of the graphic novel series that takes place after the events of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

Reality is broken by jane mcgonigal5/22/2023 It is divided into fourteen chapters under three main sections – “Why Games Make Us Happy,” Reinventing Reality,” and “How Very Big Games Can Change the World,” which I’ll summarize below. McGonigal is writing to a very broad audience – designers, theorists, academics, the public – and so it is a very readable, lucid text. Ian Bogost wrote that it “is destined to be one of the most influential works about videogames ever published,” and it has become a New York Times Bestseller. Reality is Broken has become a bit of a big deal in gaming, both in the academic and popular presses. “Where, in the real world, is that gamer sense of being fully alive, focused, and engaged in every moment? Where is the gamer feeling of power, heroic purpose, and community?… The real world just doesn’t offer up as easily the carefully designed pleasures, the thrilling challenges, and the powerful social bonding afforded by virtual environments.” (Jane McGonigal p. My research examines the cultural and psychological functions of gaming and gamer culture. in English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo. So good times.ĮL: Yes, let’s talk about math. We’re hiring more people, and I’m really looking forward to this new phase of my career. KK: So my volume of email has increased substantially, but it’s and exciting time. KK: My big news is that I’m now the chair of the math department here at the university. We had a major plumbing emergency earlier this month that is now solved. It’s fall here, or hopefully getting to be fall soon.ĮL: Yeah. And this is your other host.ĮL: I’m all right. I’m a freelance math and science writer in Salt Lake City, Utah. Evelyn Lamb: Hello and welcome to My Favorite Theorem, a math podcast where we ask mathematicians what their favorite theorem is.

The reason i jump5/22/2023 Novelist David Mitchell ( Cloud Atlas, Utopia Avenue) translated Higashida’s memoir together with his wife Keiko Mitchell (the couple has an autistic son), and he talks here about how the young author opened his eyes to the difficulties that autistic individuals face in trying to communicate with the outside world. The gap between what people perceive and the inner reality of autistic individuals is the main theme of The Reason I Jump, which is inspired by the titular 2007 book by Naoki Higashida (who is non-verbal autistic), written when he was 13. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the screen, Ben’s message is spelled out: “I think we can change the conversation around autism by being part of the conversation.” What the viewer sees and hears is Ben saying the letter “s” over and over. Late in filmmaker Jerry Rothwell’s powerful new autism documentary, twentysomething Ben uses a pointer with a letter board to communicate. |
